Trail Road Landfill Generating Facility is a landfill gas fuelled electricity facility with a nameplate capacity of 5.3 MW in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. The facility consists of five generating units.
Each unit has a rated capacity of 1060 kilowatts. Landfill gas is being produced at the Trail Road Waste Facility Landfill Site and the adjacent closed Nepean Landfill Site. It has been estimated that the Trail Road and the Nepean Sites are currently generating landfill gas at a rate in the range of approximately 2,600 to 3,000 cubic metres per hour.
Based on anticipated landfill gas recovery rates, it has been estimated that the landfill gas fuel supply is of sufficient quantity and quality to support a 5.3 MW generating facility for a 20-year renewable energy supply contract. The generation will be stepped up to 27.6 kV and will be connected to Hydro Ottawa owned Fallowfield Distribution Station. As part of the project, 3.2 kilometres of overhead pole line and 170 metres of underground cable needed to be installed.
It is estimated this facility will generate over 41,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
