Commercial Operation on December 7, 2010
Hound Chute Generating Station consists of demolition and removal of an existing 98-year-old powerhouse and all of the associated electrical and mechanical equipment, and refurbishment of existing dam and civil structures.
The new Hound Chute Generating Station is a 2-unit "run-of-the-river" hydroelectric generating facility with a nameplate capacity of 9.5 MW located on the Montreal River, about 10 kilometres east of the City of Latchford and 10 kilometres south of the Town of Cobalt in the District of Timiskaming, Ontario.
The new powerhouse which is located within 100 metres of the old powerhouse consists of two vertical Kaplan turbine-generator sets. The new powerhouse is directly coupled to a new intake canal and new tailrace. The flow will return directly to the Montreal River.
The station is operated in accordance with the Water Management Plan filed with the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The plant is connected to the existing Hydro One operated local distribution system at the embedded connection point through a step-up transformer.
It is estimated this hydroelectric generating facility will generate approximately 46,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
