Commercial Operation on November 21, 2010
Lower Sturgeon Generating Station project consists of demolition and removal of an existing 90-year-old powerhouse and all of the associated electrical and mechanical equipment, and refurbishment of existing dam structures.
The new Lower Sturgeon Generating Station is a two-unit "run-of-the-river" hydroelectric generating facility with a nameplate capacity of 14 MW located on the Mattagami River, about 48 kilometres north of the City of Timmins, Ontario.
The new powerhouse which will be located on the footprint occupied by the old powerhouse consists of two vertical Kaplan double-regulated turbine-generator sets; The new powerhouse is directly coupled to a modified intake structure equipped with trash racks and head gate. The flow will return directly to Mattagami River.
The station is operated in accordance with a Water Management Plan filed with the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The plant is connected to the existing Hydro One operated local distribution system at the embedded connection point through a step-up transformer.
When completed, it is estimated this hydroelectric generating facility will generate approximately 66,000 megawatt-hours of renewable energy per year.
